THE HOUSE OF COLORS Written by santiago orrego Illustrated by Alexandra Ruiz Published by We are Jungle and Sea After a vacation in the deep sea, Carey the turtle returns home. But she finds a surprise that makes her take action. This is a story about the Caribbean Sea, coral reefs, and kids who are eager to help. This short story is part of the Capsula Corales by Somos Selva y Mar, a Colombian children's clothing brand that focuses on environmental education through its collections. Each collection has a story that describes the ecosystem, the species that live there and the dangers they face. SHOP HERE These are some of the visual explorations I made during the course of the research on the characters that would integrate the capsule and that are based on the Seaflower biosphere in the Colombian Caribbean.

WORK BOOKS INFO BLOG MORE ABOUT ALEJANDRA ILLUSTRATION BOOKS AND STORYTELLING Stories for me have always been a window to the world. As a child, my favorite pastime was listening to my grandma and aunts as they told me stories. Later, I found in books a sanctuary and an infinite flow of ideas for my imagination. Stories helped me build empathy, to construct imaginary worlds to escape from when things felt too much. Now, as an adult, I give those stories images. So it's not a job I take lightly. It is an honor and a privilege. I illustrate stories hoping to build empathy in others, and to help other children, like me, find the infinite love for reading and for always being attentive to hear others' stories. WHO IS GUILTY? MORE ABOUT FIVE REASONS TO FIGHT WORK I've had the good fortune to work with some fantastic clients -from social organizations that try to make this world a better place, to kids clothing businesses and coffee brands. I've worked on stuff for advertising, products and whatever else there is to put illustration on. I love to be developing my artistic practice through personal projects and art experimentation. I've mixed some of that into my portfolio. See the full portfolio here. SEE MORE WORK INSTAGRAM I have a complicated relationship with Instagram. In the last months I have been working in spending more time in my real life than in the digital. I post from time to time, and it's always a pleasure to read your lovely comments and messages. WORK BOOKS INFO BLOG FIVE REASONS TO FIGHT This is a survivor's story. For years, armed conflict has plagued many areas of Colombia. This is a story of displacement, of leaving your home behind because your life is in danger. A story of resilience. 'Five reasons to fight' (Five reasons to fight) is an illustrated story that tells the life story of a victim of displacement in the department of Norte de Santander, and is also a symbol of the processes of overcoming the experiences of the victims. This illustrated story was commissioned by the Secretary of Post-Conflict and Culture of Peace of the Mayor's Office of Cúcuta and was presented at an event held on June 25, 2021. Memorializing the acts of violence is a vital necessity, not only for the local people to know and understand these events, but also to achieve a collective healing and overcoming of this pain.
